Stop renting your mind from five companies.
Cloud AI is a meter you don't control, on terms you didn't write, that can change overnight. Offline Base is a tool you own outright. Bought once, yours for good.
No one can revoke it
In the past year, cloud models have been switched off by government order, pulled from paid plans, and swapped without warning. Receipts below. Your box has no account to suspend and no switch anyone else can flip. It runs because it is yours.
No meter running
No usage caps, no surprise invoice. Ask it a thousand questions a day and the cost does not move.
Works when they're down
Outages, rate limits, and policy changes elsewhere don't reach your box. It keeps working offline, on your terms.

Claude Fable 5 switched off for everyone, June 2026
A US government export-control directive forced Anthropic to suspend its newest model for every customer, including its own employees, three days after release. Access came back in early July. Even the best model in the world can vanish overnight when it lives on someone else's servers.

The same model's removal from paid plans announced, July 2026
Days after Fable 5 came back, Anthropic announced it would leave Pro and Max subscriptions anyway, moving to pay-per-use. Demand was "very high, and difficult to predict." First a government order, then capacity math. When you rent, the switch is on someone else's wall.

GPT-4o removed the day GPT-5 launched, August 2025
OpenAI removed GPT-4o and other older models from ChatGPT for all but Pro users, without advance warning, the same day GPT-5 arrived. After immediate backlash it was brought back for paid users. The tool you rely on can be swapped from under you, and its return is a favor, not a right.

Humane's AI Pin shut off, February 2025
Ten days after HP bought Humane's assets, every AI Pin lost calling, messaging, and all AI features at noon on February 28, 2025. Refunds covered only devices shipped in the previous 90 days. Cloud-tethered AI dies when the servers do. Base Router's AI lives on the box itself.

The honest part.
Independence cuts both ways: you own the upkeep too. A box on your desk will not match the largest cloud systems on the hardest tasks. That is why outside help exists on your terms, only when you say so.
